Four Winds West is a small co-ed residential program located in Marin County, California, 40 minutes north of San Francisco. We are dedicated to helping at-risk young adults, ages 18-28, make a successful transition to independent living. Our program is tailored to the individual needs of each resident with a focus on school, work, social skills, and symptom management. The program provides housing, individual and group therapies, and a strong independent living skills program, which includes job training at our retail store, Bedrock Music and Video.
Our residents have often encountered difficulties as they moved out on their own, away from parents and the support systems they had relied on. While some have visibly struggled through middle and high school, others may have been successful academically and socially with no obvious symptoms. Now they are unable to individuate or leave home as they struggle with anxiety, depression, learning disabilities, ADHD, a history of chemical dependency or abuse. This is also the time when young adults often encounter their first episode of psychosis, either due to a thought disorder such as schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder, or due to a mood disorder, such as bipolar diorder and depression with psychotic features. As a result they are now finding themselves unable to function at school, at work, or simply finding their places in the world.
Four Winds West is a voluntary program that works well with motivated young adults. It is set up to provide the extra support needed to help these young adults find ways to reclaim their lives, allowing them to build a better future for themselves and their families.
